Why a Minimal Line

The portrait
that almost isn't there.

A minimal line portrait of a pet

The Minimal Line is the quietest mark in the catalogue. One ink line, hand-drawn imperfection retained, generous white space around the figure. It works because what's not on the paper carries as much weight as what is — the eye finishes the form on its own.

It belongs in contemporary lofts, design studios, gallery walls that already have other line work, anywhere the rest of the wall is doing the talking. It sits well next to architectural prints, plant illustrations, framed maps. A Minimal Line is also one of the few styles that prints beautifully at small sizes — A4 or A5 on a shelf, propped against books, with no frame.

It flatters pets with strong breed silhouettes — greyhounds, salukis, dobermans, sphynx cats, German shepherds. Anything where the outline reads even without the colour. It's a harder style for very fluffy breeds, where the silhouette gets soft, though we've shipped Maine Coons and Pomeranians that worked beautifully because the looseness of the line caught the fluff naturally.

About the Minimal Line

What people
actually ask.

How simple is "minimal", really?+

It's one continuous black line on pure white, no shading, no fill, no second colour. Eyes are two solid dots; the nose is a single curved mark. The line itself isn't perfect — it carries hand-drawn weight variation, the kind a real pen would leave. If you've ever bought a Picasso line print of a dove, this is the same register.

Will it work for a multi-pet print?+

Yes — this is actually the style we recommend for multi-pet prints, more than the painted ones. Two line portraits side by side, on the same paper, with consistent stroke weight, reads as a small family. Order each pet separately and we'll align them in a single composition for you; email hello@oleaandhound.com after checkout.

Does my breed need to be recognisable from outline alone?+

It helps. Whippets, greyhounds, dobermans, sphynx cats, French bulldogs — all read cleanly because the breed's signature is in the silhouette. Very fluffy breeds (Pomeranians, Maine Coons, Newfoundlands) can still work, but the line interprets the fluff loosely; if you want every coat detail, the Watercolour or Oil Painting will serve you better.

What size should I print this at?+

Minimal Line is the most format-flexible style in the catalogue. It prints beautifully at A2 with generous white margins, at A3 in a frame, or at A5 propped against books on a shelf with no frame at all. The 4096×4096 file holds up at any scale because there's no fine detail to lose.

Can I have it in a colour other than black?+

Not on the standard render — the style is anchored on pure black ink for a reason. If you'd like a deep navy or a warm sepia line instead, email hello@oleaandhound.com after you've ordered and we'll re-render at no charge.

"I framed Pelle in a Moebe oak frame, A3, white wall, north light. The portrait is the only colour in the room. Exactly what I wanted."
